You can ask almost anything during the interview when it relates to the family's children. So, how you word the question is critical! To ask about a previous nanny you could ask "How did the children relate to their past nanny?" or "Is there anything special that the last nanny did that the chilren (or the family) really liked or disliked?"

Families like to know that you are concerned about their children so just word your questions around the children and you'll find you can get a lot more information!
